Praise be to Allah عزّ وجلّ, peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammed صلَّى الله عليه وسل
Marriage contracts (Aqd Nikah) are very important in Islam.
When read aloud, the marriage contract is what enables a man and a woman to be united in marriage.
For many reasons having to do with the spouses’ personalities, there are no two identical marriages. By creating a Muslim marriage contract, you are establishing in Allah’s عزّ وجلّ, eyes a private, customized document about how you wish to set up your marital relationship in many areas, in greater or lesser detail. Each spouse’s Islamic rights and obligations will thus be clearly specified. In addition, the marriage contract document is important proof of the existence of the marriage. |
A marriage contract that takes into account each spouse’s expectations enables both spouses to live out their relationship more happily and comfortably so that they may benefit from all the advantages of marriage.
The marriage contract may be simple or complex depending on what the spouses want.
Creating a marriage contract should be considered one possible way of responsibly strengthening the couple’s relationship and of avoiding potential conflicts.
If the future spouses take the time to discuss their expectations, their plans and their vision for their life together as a couple, together they can define and create a marriage contract perfectly suited to them.
For all these reasons, creating and signing a marriage contract at the end of the wedding ceremony is a common and ancient practice in the Ummah.
And Allah عزّ وجلّ knows best
